Gardez sits on a high plateau in eastern Afghanistan, and from above it reads as a tight cluster of streets set within a broad, open basin. Mountains frame the valley on several sides, so the built area looks small against the empty ground around it. Roads come in from the surrounding districts and meet near the centre, giving the plan a loose star shape.
The town is the capital of Paktia province and has long been a stopping point on routes between the Kabul region and the southeast. An old fortress on raised ground near the centre, known locally as the Bala Hissar, is the clearest single landmark. On the map its outline stands apart from the looser grain of the houses and compound walls around it.
