Georgetown, the capital of Guyana, sits on the Atlantic coast where the Demerara River meets the sea. Much of the city lies below high-tide level. A long sea wall protects it, and a network of canals and trenches, first dug in colonial times, drains it. On a map this produces an orderly grid of avenues, many with tree-lined central walks where canals once ran.
The city began as a colonial town in the late eighteenth century. Under the Dutch it was called Stabroek, and in 1812 it was renamed after King George III. It is known for its wooden colonial buildings, above all St. George's Cathedral, one of the tallest wooden churches in the world. Stabroek Market, with its iron clock tower, stands beside the river.

Canals and avenues
Colonial-era drainage canals and trenches cross the city, and several broad avenues still have tree-lined central walks. Together they create the distinctive double lines of Georgetown's grid.
Demerara riverfront
The wide Demerara River forms the western edge of the city, lined with wharves and Stabroek Market. Upstream, the long floating Demerara Harbour Bridge crosses it.
