Gerāsh lies in the far south of Fars province, in the Larestan region, where the Zagros folds break into long, parallel ridges separated by dry basins. From above, the town sits on one of these flat valley floors, a compact spread of streets and walled plots, with bare slopes rising sharply on either side.
The climate is hot and arid, and settlement here has always depended on careful use of scarce water. The region has strong ties to the Persian Gulf, and many families from Gerāsh and neighbouring Larestan towns have long worked and traded across the water in the Gulf states. On the map, though, the setting is entirely inland and dry.
