Godhra is the administrative centre of Panchmahal district, in eastern Gujarat, on the way from the plains around Vadodara toward the hillier country near the Madhya Pradesh border. On a map the town has a dense older core of close-set lanes. Around it, newer neighbourhoods are laid out more loosely along the roads that run out to neighbouring towns.
The railway is one of the main organising lines. Godhra is a junction on the busy corridor linking western and northern India, and the tracks and station yard form a long, straight band that the rest of the street pattern has grown around.
