Gonubie lies on the coast just north-east of East London and is part of the Buffalo City metropolitan area in the Eastern Cape. The town is built around the mouth of the Gonubie River, which reaches the sea through a sheltered estuary. On a map, the river draws a clear line through the scene, with residential streets spread over the rising ground beside it.
The main beach runs beside the river mouth, and a wooden boardwalk follows part of the shoreline. Inland, the Gonubie Nature Reserve protects a small wetland known for its birdlife, one of the town's quieter landmarks. Much of the housing is suburban, with curving crescents and cul-de-sacs instead of a grid, so the street pattern looks loose and organic.
