Gori is in the Shida Kartli region of central Georgia, where the Liakhvi River flows into the Mtkvari, known elsewhere as the Kura. A rocky hill rises in the middle of the town, crowned by Gori Fortress, and the streets spread around its base. From above, the two rivers frame the town on the south and east, and the main highway between Tbilisi and western Georgia passes nearby.
Gori is the birthplace of Joseph Stalin, and the town's museum about him, with the small house where he was born, is one of its best-known sites. A few kilometres east is Uplistsikhe, an ancient rock-cut town carved into a cliff above the Mtkvari. The surrounding plain is known for orchards, especially apples.
