Grigny is a commune in Essonne, about twenty kilometres south of central Paris, close to the left bank of the Seine. On a map it is unlike most of its neighbours. Its street pattern is shaped as much by large post-war housing projects as by any older village plan.
The most striking shape belongs to La Grande Borne, the estate designed by the architect Émile Aillaud. Its long, low buildings snake in curves around open courtyards. Nearby, the Grigny 2 complex adds a different geometry of tall slabs. To the east, a chain of ponds shared with Viry-Châtillon lays wide areas of water across the map.
