Gucun is a town in Baoshan District, in the northern part of Shanghai. Like much of the Yangtze delta, the land is completely flat, and the map is shaped by roads, waterways and planning. Wide arterial roads divide the area into large blocks, and within them sit residential complexes whose parallel rows of towers appear as neat repeated shapes.
Small rivers and drainage channels, a legacy of the delta's farmland, still run through the town. They cut across the modern grid at slight angles, softening its edges. The metro line reaches Gucun from central Shanghai, and its stations have become focal points for newer development along its route.
The best-known feature is Gucun Park, one of Shanghai's largest parks, which draws crowds each spring for its cherry blossom festival.
