Ḩalwān Map Poster
Ḩalwān, usually written Helwan in English, lies at the southern edge of Greater Cairo on the east bank of the Nile. On a map the city stretches between the river to the west and the desert plateau to the east. There is a regular grid of streets in the centre, larger industrial areas to the south, and the metro line that links it to downtown Cairo.
Helwan was developed in the nineteenth century as a spa town, built around sulphur springs, and later became home to an astronomical observatory and a university. In the twentieth century it grew into a major industrial centre with steelworks and factories. A Japanese garden from the early twentieth century still survives.
A Ḩalwān map poster brings these layers together. The river edge is dense and green, the planned centre is orderly, and industrial land and desert open out to the east. It is a map of Cairo at its limits, where the city meets both the Nile and the plateau.
