Ḩamāh lies in western Syria on the Orontes River, which winds through the city in a series of tight curves between steep banks. On a map the river is the defining line. Neighbourhoods climb away from it on both sides, and the older quarters sit closest to the water, where streets narrow and turn irregularly before opening into the straighter layouts of later districts.
The city is famous for its norias, large wooden waterwheels that lifted river water into aqueducts for irrigation, some of them centuries old. Several still stand along the Orontes in the centre. Nearby, the citadel hill, an ancient mound occupied for thousands of years, is now a public park, and from above it reads as a rounded open space among dense blocks.
