Harrismith lies in the eastern Free State, at the foot of Platberg, a long, flat-topped mountain that rises high above the town. On the map its streets make a clear colonial-era grid of straight roads and square blocks, set against the irregular contour of the mountain to the north and open grassland stretching away in the other directions.
The town is named after Sir Harry Smith, a nineteenth-century governor of the Cape Colony. Today it is best known as a stopping point on the N3 between Johannesburg and Durban, and the highway and its interchanges curve around the older grid. The Wilge River passes close by, its meandering course a softer line across the plain.
Townships and newer neighbourhoods extend outwards from the original centre, each with its own street pattern, so the map shows several layers of the town's growth side by side. A Harrismith map poster puts the grid, the highway and the mountain in one frame.
