Hellín lies in the south-east of Castilla-La Mancha, in the province of Albacete, close to the border with Murcia. The old town rises up a hill crowned by the remains of a castle, with narrow, sloping streets winding between houses and churches. Below, the newer districts spread out in a more regular pattern toward the railway and the farmland of the surrounding plain.
Hellín is known across Spain for its Tamborada, when thousands of drummers fill the streets during Holy Week in a rhythm that carries on for days, recognised as a Festival of International Tourist Interest. The area also has a long tradition of working esparto grass, and prehistoric rock art in the nearby Minateda shelters speaks of far older inhabitants.
