Hepu lies in the south of Guangxi, just north-east of Beihai, on the flat plain of the lower Nanliu River as it approaches the Gulf of Tonkin. From above, the county seat is a compact town set beside the river, surrounded by rice fields, ponds and villages. Channels of the delta branch south toward the coast, where the land dissolves into tidal flats.
Hepu has a long history as a port and trading centre. During the Han dynasty it was one of the departure points of the Maritime Silk Road, and the many Han tombs discovered around the town reflect that period of wealth. The region is also famous for Hepu pearls, prized in China for centuries and often simply called southern pearls.
