Herten Map Poster & Print
Herten lies in the northern Ruhr, in North Rhine-Westphalia, between Recklinghausen and Gelsenkirchen. For much of the twentieth century it was one of the major coal-mining towns of the region, and its layout still reflects that era: workers' settlements, former colliery sites and rail lines run through a web of residential streets.
Since mining ended, the landscape has been reshaped. The Hoheward spoil heap, shared with Recklinghausen, has become a landscape park with a horizon observatory and sweeping paths, while the former Ewald colliery has been turned into a business and leisure site. Schloss Herten, a moated castle set in a park, adds an older layer.
A Herten map poster shows a place in transition. Curving paths across the former heaps contrast with the grid of housing estates, and green spaces now separate districts once divided by industry. Motorways and rail lines cross the scene, linking the town to the wider Ruhr, and together these elements create a surprisingly varied composition.
