Hove lies on the Sussex coast, immediately west of Brighton, and since 2000 the two have formed the city of Brighton and Hove. From above, its most striking feature is the order of its layout: long, parallel avenues run north from the sea, crossed by east-west roads, making a neat grid of Victorian and Edwardian streets set back from the shore.
Along the coast the pattern turns grander. Brunswick Square opens to the sea near the Brighton boundary, and Adelaide Crescent curves around its gardens further west, both lined with cream Regency terraces. Below them are Hove Lawns, the promenade and a long row of beach huts. The coastline itself is almost straight, so the whole town seems to line up facing the Channel.

The sea gives it a firm lower edge, the squares and crescents break it up with open shapes, and the avenue grid fills the space up to the railway and the Downs beyond. The phrase "Hove, actually", once a local joke about not being mistaken for Brighton, captures the town's quieter character well.

The avenues
Wide, parallel avenues run from the seafront up towards the railway, giving Hove its orderly grid. In a monochrome print they read like evenly spaced ruled lines.
