Huercal-Overa lies in the northeast of Almería Province, close to the border with the Region of Murcia. The old town climbs the slopes below a medieval castle tower, with narrow, irregular streets typical of settlements of Moorish origin, while newer districts spread across the flatter land below in a more regular pattern. The contrast between hill and plain shapes the whole map.
The municipality covers a wide area of dry hills, ramblas and farmland in the Almanzora country, with scattered hamlets and farmhouses linked by rural roads.
