Ipatinga is the largest city of the Vale do Aço, the Steel Valley of eastern Minas Gerais. Industry shapes its layout on the map. The Usiminas steelworks covers a large area beside the river, and residential districts spread across the valley floor and the surrounding hills. The Piracicaba River runs along the city before joining the Rio Doce nearby, and it draws a clear edge along one side.
The modern city grew up around the steel plant from the late 1950s and became a municipality in 1964. The company planned many of its early neighbourhoods, arranging curving streets, schools and squares into self-contained districts. Ipatinga is also known for Parque Ipanema, one of the largest urban parks in Brazil, which runs as a long green strip through the middle of the city.

A long green park crosses the city and leaves a broad open strip between the neighbourhoods on either side. It gives the dense centre of the map room to breathe.
