Irecê lies in north-central Bahia, on a broad plateau in the semi-arid interior of northeastern Brazil, north of the Chapada Diamantina. The town is the main centre of its micro-region and is known in Bahia for farming, especially beans, which earned it a reputation as a regional bean capital.
