Ishigaki has an irregular, sprawling outline. Its main body is mountainous, and a long, narrow peninsula runs north from it. The city sits on the flatter southern coast, where its compact streets meet the port. From there, roads spread along the coast and around the mountain slopes. Reefs surround much of the island and add a second, finer outline in the water.
The island's highest peak, Mount Omoto, is the tallest point in Okinawa Prefecture. On the northwest coast, Kabira Bay is known for its sheltered turquoise water and for pearl farming. Divers come to see manta rays in the surrounding channels, and Ishigaki beef is known throughout Japan. The island is the transport hub for the other Yaeyama islands.
