Isla de la Juventud is Cuba's second-largest island, lying south of the main island in the Gulf of Batabanó. Its outline is broad and blunt. The northern part is firm ground with low hills, farmland and a road network centred on Nueva Gerona, the main town. The Las Casas river runs to the sea there, and Nueva Gerona's modest street grid sits along its bank.
Across the middle, the Ciénaga de Lanier stretches from coast to coast. This wide swamp almost cuts the island in two, and roads barely cross it. South of the marsh, the land is flatter and sparsely settled, edged with sandy shores and reefs. On the map, the busy north and the empty south show up plainly.
Until 1978 the island was called Isla de Pinos. Near Nueva Gerona stand the round cell blocks of the Presidio Modelo, the prison where Fidel Castro was held after the 1953 Moncada attack.
