Jamūī is the headquarters of Jamui district in southern Bihar, a region where the Gangetic plain begins to give way to rolling, wooded uplands. The town itself lies on level ground near the Kiul River, and its map shows a compact centre of dense lanes surrounded by looser residential growth and roads heading out toward neighbouring districts.
