Kampung Kupang sits in the interior of Kedah, away from the rice plains that most people picture when they think of the state. On a map the town is a compact knot of streets where several country roads meet. Beyond it the landscape opens into the irregular blocks of plantations and village holdings, cut through by the fine lines of streams and footpaths.
