Kharabali sits in Astrakhan Oblast on the left bank of the Akhtuba, a long branch of the Volga that runs parallel to the main river for hundreds of kilometres. The town itself follows a plain rectangular grid, with broad blocks of single-storey houses laid out in regular rows beside the water.
What makes the map interesting is the land on the other side. The floodplain between the Akhtuba and the Volga is braided with channels, oxbow lakes and islands, a lacework of curving lines that contrasts sharply with the town's straight streets. To the east, the semi-desert steppe opens out, flat and almost empty.
