Khmelnytskyi lies in western Ukraine on the Southern Bug River, which curls around the city in a series of bends. The historic centre sits within this curve, and its streets follow a largely regular grid, a pattern that makes the city easy to read from above and gives the centre a strong, rectangular core.
Until 1954 the city was called Proskuriv, and it was renamed after the seventeenth-century hetman Bohdan Khmelnytskyi. It is also known for one of the largest open-air markets in Ukraine, a sprawling area of stalls on the city's edge. A pedestrian street runs through the centre, and parks line parts of the riverbank.
