Kimberley grew out of a diamond rush in 1871, when prospectors flooded the flat veld in the Northern Cape. Its street plan shows that start. Instead of a planned grid, many streets bend and meet at odd angles. They follow the paths between the early mining camps and claims, which grew into neighbourhoods over time.
Near the centre is the Big Hole, the old Kimberley Mine. It is one of the largest hand-dug excavations in the world, a deep crater now partly filled with water. On the map it is a large round void in the middle of the streets. Mine dumps and old workings mark other parts of the town.
Kimberley was also one of the first cities in the Southern Hemisphere to install electric street lights, in 1882. A Kimberley map poster shows the old mining town from above, with the Big Hole at its centre and the streets bending around it.

Many streets still follow routes laid out during the diamond rush. Their irregular angles give Kimberley a street pattern unlike most planned South African towns.

Flattened mine dumps and other old workings appear as broad open areas across the town. They break up the streets and show the industry that created the city.
