Kladno lies about 25 kilometres west of Prague and is the largest city in the Central Bohemian Region. It grew rapidly in the nineteenth century around coal mining and steelmaking, particularly the Poldi steelworks, and that industrial past is still written into the map. Large former industrial sites, rail lines and worker housing sit alongside the older town centre and its castle.
The historic core around the main square is compact, but the city spreads widely in every direction. Postwar housing estates form big geometric blocks on the outskirts, while older neighbourhoods follow more irregular lines. Former mine sites, spoil heaps and industrial zones add large, distinct shapes, and patches of woodland and parkland soften the edges as the city meets the countryside.
Kladno is also closely linked with ice hockey and is the hometown of Jaromír Jágr, one of the sport's best-known players.
