Køge lies on the east coast of Zealand, at the southern end of the wide bay that bears its name. The town received its charter in the thirteenth century, and its old centre still has a medieval street plan, with narrow lanes and half-timbered houses clustered around a large central square.
The coast shapes the map. The shoreline of Køge Bugt runs in a long, gentle curve, the harbour cuts sharp rectangular basins into it, and the small Køge Å river runs through the town to the sea. Beyond the centre, newer residential areas and the railway connect Køge toward Copenhagen and Ringsted.
