Lanai sits in the lee of Maui and Molokai, a compact, roughly oval island rising to an upland plateau and a ridge along its eastern side. Its map is defined by restraint: a single town near the middle of the island and a limited network of roads running out toward the shore.
Lanai City was laid out in the 1920s as a plantation town when the island was turned over to pineapple growing, and for decades Lanai supplied a large share of the world's crop. The town's regular grid wraps around Dole Park, a central green lined with tall Cook pines. From there roads run to Manele Bay in the south and toward the northern shore.
A Lanai map poster brings out that unusual structure: one tidy grid in the uplands, a few long routes and a coastline left mostly to itself. Beyond the town, the terrain includes rocky, wind-shaped ground in the northwest and a long shoreline facing Molokai, where an old wrecked ship has sat on the reef for decades.
