Lanxi grew at a meeting of rivers in western Zhejiang, and water defines its map. The Qu and Jinhua rivers join near the city to form the Lan River, which continues north toward the Fuchun and Qiantang. The old town lines the riverbanks, with a tight pattern of streets pressed between the water and the rising ground behind.
For centuries this position made Lanxi an important river port, where goods moved between the interior and the coast. Newer districts have spread outward across the flatter land, with broader roads and regular blocks, while bridges connect the different banks. Hills appear at the edges of the map, framing the river valley.
Near the city lies Zhuge village, whose residents trace their descent from the strategist Zhuge Liang and whose layout is said to follow the pattern of the eight trigrams.
