Lashio is the main town of northern Shan State in Myanmar, set among rolling hills on the Shan plateau. Unlike towns on open plains, its streets curve and step around the terrain, so the map shows neighbourhoods separated by slopes and valleys rather than a single regular grid.
The town is known historically as the starting point of the Burma Road, the route built in the late 1930s to carry supplies across the mountains to Kunming in China. It is also the end of the railway line that climbs up from Mandalay, which made Lashio an important point of transfer between rail and road.
