Latacunga sits in the inter-Andean valley of central Ecuador at around 2,800 metres, on a broad plain crossed by the Cutuchi River. The colonial centre follows a regular grid of blocks around its main squares, and many older buildings are made of pale volcanic stone, a material that gives the city its character on the ground.
Roughly thirty kilometres to the northeast stands Cotopaxi, one of the highest active volcanoes in the world. Its eruptions have damaged Latacunga several times over the centuries, and mudflows down the valley remain a risk the city plans for. On the map, the river running from the volcano toward the city is a quiet reminder of that relationship.
Latacunga is also known for the Mama Negra, a festival that fills the old streets with costumed processions and music, held in both a religious and a civic version each year. The Pan-American Highway and older roads follow the valley floor north toward Quito and south toward Ambato, giving the city a strong north-south axis.
