Leça da Palmeira is a coastal town in the municipality of Matosinhos, just north of Porto. It faces the Atlantic on one side and the Port of Leixões on the other, across the mouth of the river Leça. On a map it is a strip of dense streets behind a long seafront avenue, with the port's breakwaters and docks drawn in sharp geometric lines.
Rocky outcrops and sandy beaches alternate along the shore. Here Álvaro Siza built two of his earliest well-known works: the Boa Nova Tea House on the rocks and the Leça tidal swimming pools set into the shoreline. The Boa Nova lighthouse stands further north. Inland the grid becomes looser and more residential, crossed by larger roads and industrial sites.
