The singel ring
A continuous loop of canal surrounds the historic core. Its angled corners follow the old bastions, and it is the most recognisable shape on any map of the city.

Mapa
Leeuwarden Map Poster & Print
Leeuwarden is the capital of Friesland, and its map is defined by water. The historic centre is surrounded by a loop of singels, the canals that follow the line of the old fortifications. Their angular zigzag still shows where the bastions once stood. Inside this ring, narrower grachten cut through the old town and divide it into irregular blocks of dense streets.
Outside the singels the city spreads into newer districts, parks and waterways that continue into the flat, lake-dotted Frisian countryside. The Oldehove, a leaning church tower that was never finished, marks the old centre. The city was European Capital of Culture in 2018, and it is linked to two well-known names. The graphic artist M. C. Escher was born here, and so was Mata Hari.
A Leeuwarden map poster suits anyone who likes a plan with a clear outline. The water ring works almost like a frame within the frame. The canals read as bold bands, and the old streets pack tightly inside them. Beyond the ring, the looser pattern of the later city gives the composition some contrast and depth.

Inner grachten
Narrower canals run through the old centre and split it into blocks with quays on both sides. They add fine lines of water to the dense street pattern.
Flat water country
Beyond the built-up area, drainage channels and straight polder roads spread across the low land. They show how closely Frisian towns are tied to water management.
