Libiąż is a town in western Lesser Poland, in Chrzanów County, between Kraków and Upper Silesia. Its modern growth is tied to coal mining, and the Janina colliery still defines the town. On a map, the mine's grounds, rail sidings and spoil areas form large, irregular shapes next to the residential districts.
The street pattern mixes old village roads, which wander the way rural lanes do, with planned estates of apartment blocks built as the town industrialised. The result is a map of contrasts: curving streets beside rectangular blocks, tight clusters beside open ground left by industry. Patches of forest and fields surround the town.
