Ljubljana is compact, and its map is easy to read. The castle hill rises at the centre, wrapped by the old town on its western and northern sides. The Ljubljanica river curves around the hill's foot, and the historic streets follow the water closely. A series of bridges ties the two banks together, so the river feels like a central street rather than a boundary.
Much of the city's character comes from the architect Jože Plečnik, who reshaped its riverbanks, bridges and public spaces between the wars. His Triple Bridge, three footbridges fanning out from one point, is among the most recognisable shapes in the centre. Nearby is the Dragon Bridge. To the west, the large green expanse of Tivoli Park stretches from the centre toward wooded hills.
Beyond the core, Ljubljana opens out onto a plain. A ring road encloses the city, and the outer districts and marshlands fan out to the south.
