Long Biên is an urban district of Hanoi on the east bank of the Red River, opposite the historic centre. On the map it is framed by water. The Red River runs along its western side and the Đuống River curves along the north. Inside those boundaries, new residential areas, wide roads and older village lanes sit side by side, all on flat, low-lying land.
The district is named after the Long Biên Bridge, a steel bridge built by the French in the early twentieth century that still carries trains, motorbikes and pedestrians across the river. It was badly damaged during the Vietnam War and repeatedly repaired. Newer road bridges now cross nearby, but the old span remains a symbol of Hanoi.
A Long Biên map poster shows a district in the middle of change. Planned blocks and broad avenues are spreading out over the land between the rivers. Only the bridges link it to the older city across the water, and the rivers give the composition a clear, strong frame.
