Lytham St Annes occupies the southwestern corner of the Fylde, where the coast turns from the open Irish Sea into the Ribble estuary. St Annes faces west over a long beach backed by sand dunes. Lytham, to the east, looks south across the estuary's mudflats and channels. On a map, two shorelines meet at an angle, and planned residential streets fill the land behind them.
Lytham is known for the white windmill that stands on the green beside the estuary. St Annes has a Victorian pier and was laid out as a resort in the late nineteenth century. Between them, the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club has hosted the Open Championship many times on its links course.
