Mannheim's centre is one of the most recognisable city plans in Germany. Instead of street names, the blocks inside the old town are identified by a letter and a number, such as A1 or Q7, creating a grid known as the Quadratestadt. On the map, these squares form a rounded shape, with the palace closing its southern end and ring roads surrounding the rest.
The Rhine runs along the city's western side, and the Neckar joins it from the east, curving around the northern edge of the centre. Their harbours, bridges and port basins take up much of the map beyond the grid. The baroque palace, now used by the university, is one of the largest in Europe, and its long facade faces the grid of the city it was designed to rule.
