Mīāndoāb lies in West Azerbaijan Province in north-western Iran, on the low plain south-east of Lake Urmia. Its name means between two waters, which describes its position exactly: it sits between the Zarrineh Rud and the Simineh Rud, two rivers flowing north toward the lake. On a map the town occupies a broad corridor of farmland, with channels and roads spreading across the plain.
The rivers make this one of the most productive farming areas in the region. Orchards and fields of wheat and sugar beet surround the town, and a sugar factory processes the local harvest. The street plan combines an older, denser core with straight avenues and newer districts, and bridges carry the main roads over the rivers.
