Miass follows the Miass River along the eastern slopes of the southern Urals, and its map is unusually elongated, with separate districts strung out for many kilometres along the valley and the railway. Forested ridges rise on both sides, and lakes lie close by. They include Turgoyak to the north-west, known for its exceptionally clear water.
The city began in 1773 as a copper-smelting settlement and became a centre of the Ural gold rush in the nineteenth century. It later grew around the Ural Automobile Plant, which builds heavy trucks, and the Makeyev rocket design bureau. Just north lies the Ilmen Nature Reserve, known among mineralogists for the variety of minerals found there.
