Miercurea-Ciuc, known in Hungarian as Csíkszereda, is the seat of Harghita County and lies in the Ciuc depression, a wide basin in the Eastern Carpathians. The upper Olt River runs through the valley along the town's western side, and from above the town stretches along it, with mountains closing in on both sides and the flat basin floor between them.
The basin traps cold air, and the town regularly records some of Romania's lowest winter temperatures, which helps explain its long ice hockey tradition. The historic centre gathers around Mikó Castle, while the Șumuleu Ciuc pilgrimage site at the edge of town draws very large crowds of Hungarian Catholic pilgrims every Pentecost.
