Millau lies in the Aveyron in southern France, where the Dourbie joins the Tarn in a deep valley cut into the limestone plateaus of the Grands Causses. On a map the two rivers meet near the town, and the streets fill the flatter ground by the water before climbing the slopes. Steep cliffs and high plateaus rise all around, leaving the town in a green hollow.
West of the town the Millau Viaduct crosses the Tarn valley. Designed by the engineer Michel Virlogeux with the architect Norman Foster and opened in 2004, it carries the motorway on masts taller than any other bridge in the world. A Millau map poster shows it as a long, thin line spanning the valley, a modern counterweight to the old town below.
The historic centre is compact and round, with narrow streets around the market square and the belfry. Millau has a long tradition of glove-making from lambskin, linked to the sheep that graze the Larzac plateau to the south, the same flocks that supply Roquefort. The printed map combines river, old town and plateau edges into a clearly structured whole.
