Mljet Map Poster
Mljet lies off the southern Dalmatian coast, south of the Pelješac peninsula and west of Dubrovnik. It is long and very narrow, almost a ridge in the sea, covered in pine forest and scrub. One main road runs its full length, linking small villages and harbours. Much of the shoreline is steep, with coves tucked between rocky points.
The western part of the island is a national park, known for two connected saltwater lakes, Veliko and Malo jezero, which reach the sea through narrow channels. A Benedictine monastery stands on a small islet in the larger lake. Local tradition also names Mljet as the island where the nymph Calypso held Odysseus.
A Mljet map poster draws attention to the two lakes, which sit like inner seas at the western end. The rest of the island stretches east in a slender line. Near the lakes, Polače has the remains of a Roman palace by its harbour. The eastern end finishes in quieter bays such as Saplunara.
