Moncalieri lies directly south of Turin, on both sides of the Po River where the city's metropolitan area meets the hills of the Collina Torinese. The historic town sits on a height on the right bank, its streets climbing toward the castle, while newer neighbourhoods spread across the flatter land on the opposite bank, bordered by roads and railway lines.
The Castello di Moncalieri, a residence of the House of Savoy, crowns the old town and forms part of the Residences of the Royal House of Savoy, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The castle and the streets below it give Moncalieri a clearly defined historic centre, distinct from the continuous suburban fabric around Turin.
