Montreux occupies a thin strip of shoreline at the eastern end of Lake Geneva, where the land rises almost immediately from the water. From above, the town reads as a long curve: a lakeside promenade, a band of hotels and apartment blocks behind it, then roads that zigzag uphill through villages and vineyards toward the pre-Alps. Very little of it is flat, and the map shows that in every bend.
The town is known far beyond Switzerland for the Montreux Jazz Festival, founded in 1967, and for the casino fire of 1971 that inspired Deep Purple's Smoke on the Water. A walk along the shore leads to the Château de Chillon, a medieval castle set on a rock in the lake, which appears on the map as a small knot of lines at the water's edge.
