Morigaon lies on the flat alluvial plain south of the Brahmaputra in central Assam, and on a map the town reads as a compact cluster of streets surrounded by open land. There are no hills to bend the roads here. Streets run where the ground is dry enough to carry them, and the town thins out quickly into fields, ponds and scattered settlements that follow the lines of rural roads.
Water shapes almost everything around the town. The Brahmaputra's wide, braided channel sits to the north, and the surrounding district is marked by marshes, oxbow lakes and seasonal wetlands that appear as irregular pale patches between fields.
