Mosta sits near the middle of Malta, on the island's central plateau, between the old capital Mdina and the harbour towns to the east. Malta is small and densely built, so Mosta merges into the neighbouring towns in many directions. On a map its edges are harder to see than its centre, which stands out clearly.
The core is the Rotunda, the Church of the Assumption, whose round footprint and large square are the focal point of the street plan. Narrow streets of limestone houses spread out from it, and later housing estates fill the land towards the valleys. To the north the ground falls away along the escarpment followed by the Victoria Lines, the old British fortifications across the island.
The Rotunda is famous for a 1942 air raid, when a bomb pierced the dome during a service, fell among the congregation and did not explode. A Mosta map poster centres on that church and the tight town around it, a good fit for Maltese families abroad or anyone who has stood under the dome.

On the northern edge the street pattern stops at the ridge and valleys where the Victoria Lines run, giving the map a natural boundary.
