Mufumbwe is the administrative centre of a district in Zambia's North-Western Province, a sparsely populated region of woodland, plains and rivers. The town itself is small, and from above it reads as a handful of streets and plots gathered around the main road, with public buildings, a market area and homes spread out in a relaxed, uncrowded pattern.
Around it the map opens into a vast landscape. Tracks lead away through the woodland to villages and farms, and the distances between settlements are long. This makes the drawing unusual among town maps: the settlement is a small, detailed cluster in the middle of the sheet, surrounded by space that speaks of the scale of the country around it.
