Mula is an inland town in the Region of Murcia in southeastern Spain. Its layout is shaped by a steep rocky outcrop. The sixteenth-century Castillo de los Vélez sits on top, and the old town climbs toward it in narrow, twisting streets. Lower down, the grid loosens into newer blocks and main roads.
The Mula river runs through the valley below and brings a thin green line of irrigated plots into dry, hilly country. The town is well known for its Holy Week drumming. On the night of Holy Tuesday, the Tamborada fills the streets with thousands of drummers, and the sound is the defining image of Mula for many visitors.

Below the castle, the historic centre is a maze of short, curving lanes. This pattern is typical of old towns in Murcia and is very different from the straighter streets further out.
