Murata is a town in Miyagi Prefecture, south of Sendai. It sits in a small basin surrounded by low, wooded hills. The historic centre is compact, laid out along an old commercial street. Rice paddies spread across the valley floor, and the Tohoku Expressway passes by on the edge, a clean modern line cutting across the older pattern.
The town's history as a merchant centre is still visible in its preserved kura, the thick-walled storehouses that line the main street. They are a reminder of Murata's role in the historic trade of safflower, which was used for red dye. In the surrounding hills lies Sportsland SUGO, a motorsport circuit whose track appears on the map.
